Description:
Meet loverboy, Casanova, stealer of hearts and smooshy lump of lovin'.  He is a powderpuff Chinese Crested, estimated about 2 years old, and about 15 pounds. And adorable! He looks like a miniature border collie, and as a puff is a no-shed alternative!

By nature, Nova is a submissive dog who needs to be in a pack with a confident leader and confident dogs. He is a very shy dog, fearful of strangers, but will depend on his person and lean on them for encouragement and support. Once he attaches to you, his is yours! When around strangers or in a crowd, he wants to be invisible, and so he must be leashed or isolated to adjust gradually.

Nova needs a forever home willing to support him with love, routine and patience to help him continue to gain confidence. He has shown improvement thanks to socialization and basic training. His adjustment will be ongoing, when it comes to strangers. He would do very well with owners willing to commit to take training classes with him, and ongoing exposure to new dogs and new people, to continue his growth. Due to his nervous nature, he is not recommended for a home with small children or a lot of visitors.

Nova is doing really great as far as house manners, and will potty in the yard or on a leash walk. He loves to go on walks and would be happiest in a home where he gets to go on daily walks-- even short ones-- even if he has access to a yard. He is given access to the house while his foster mom is at work, and he is not destructive. He is being fostered alongside cats and gets along just fine with them.

Nova originally came to us testing heartworm positive and has been fully treated for that. He is a healthy guy who loves to run and play. It's fun to watch him getting things going with the other dogs in the yard. One of my dogs plays with him more than I've seen him play in a good while. Nova is a great dog and likes playing both with toys and other dogs. And then he really just wants to be with his person.

Due to his fearful nature, Casanova will need a forever home with a fenced in yard: primarily to aid in his transition when first adopted, but also because he enjoys off-leash time. Whoever adopts Nova should understand he will have a challenging adjustment, probably a week or so, as he earns your trust. Mostly, that looks like him "hiding" in his crate, but he will slowly venture out and figure out that person who is feeding him are actually worth getting to know. Once he decides you're okay, he's "all-in."

In summary, Nova's ideal home will have:
*at least one other dog, confident and balanced, to be a good role model.
*a confident pack leader to support his adjustment.
*a fenced in yard.
*patience!
If you would like to apply for Casanova, feel free to do so at any time.  He's being fostered in Greenville, SC.
